How can i play downloaded podcast files on audacity

Note: This TechTip only covers how to set up and use Audacity to do a voice recording. A future TechTip will discuss how to meld in a backing audio track and to fade in and fade out audio. Audacity is an Open Source sound recorder and editor. It has a number of features that enable you to record, modify, and export audio files. Most podcasts are distributed as an MP3 file.

Next, click the Quality tab. Notice the Default Sample Rate dropdown list. The sample rate determines the overall quality of the sound — the higher the rate, the better the sound. The preset value is Hz. Change that value to HZ. This may seem strange, especially considering that you want the best quality audio for your podcasts. When the audio is played back, a phenomenon called chipmunking occurs.

Remember the annoying voices of the characters in the cartoon Alvin and the Chipmunks? The lower sample rate, while slightly decreasing the audio quality, also gets rid of the chipmunking problem.

If you want to change the sample rate of an Audacity project, you can do so by clicking the Project Rate button in the bottom-left of the interface and selecting a new rate. Also, try to include a few seconds of silence here and there throughout the recording. This will be useful later when you need to remove noise. Before you record for real, however, you should do a couple of test recordings to check whether or not the microphone volume is set correctly.

If you find that the volume is too high or too low, you can adjust it using the volume control in Audacity. You upload your podcast to SwitchPod by registering, uploading and clicking control panel. Here you can create your podcast by following the steps provided. Save your info! Upload your podcast. Uploading may take a little bit of time so be patient! Now, you will be given a podcast URL, which shows you all the pod-casts you have uploaded. Copy this URL, paste it into your web browser and save this link for later.

If you want your podcast on iTunes open up iTunes and got to the iTunes store. Click the podcast panel, go to the bottom of page and click submit podcast under 'Learn More'. Highlight the start of your podcast episode, then click Effects and then Fade In. Then highlight the end of your podcast episode and go to Effects and then Fade Out.

If your audio is too quiet or too loud, you can adjust that by amplifying or normalising it. If your audio is too quiet, select the portion of your track or the whole thing, and then go to Effects and then Amplify. Here you can either adjust the slider, or type in a dB number. Enter a dB maximum amplitude you want to set as the limit for your audio, and preview the changes. Extreme peaks and dips in the waveform can sound very harsh on the ears in comparison to the rest of the audio, but this can be fixed.

You can bring the volume closer together to level it out. Highlight the whole podcast episode, and then go to Effects , then Compressor. You can usually see these pretty easily on your waveform, by looking for short, large spikes in the wave. You can easily minimise these. Highlight your plosives, then go to Effects and Equalization. Then click Graphic EQ , and this should bring up some sliders so you can adjust the wavelength manually.

Set the first 4 sliders on this to dB, then put the next 8 sliders up by -2dB each until just past Hz. Then just leave the rest of the sliders as they are. Save this set up as something you will easily remember, like Plosive Fixer. Then click OK and the highlighted bits of your audio should fix themselves.

You can also reuse this set up now as a preset! When your audio is all clean and ready to be published to your podcast, you can export your episode. To do this, just go to File , then Export Audio.
